For international readers — the surprisingly hard choice of picking a 16-pixel icon.
When building a new website, where do you spend the most time?
Content? Layout? Color scheme? All important, of course. But the thing that gave me the most trouble was a tiny little icon that sits quietly in the corner of your browser tab — the favicon.
What’s a Favicon?
It’s the small icon that appears next to the page title when you have multiple tabs open. Think of it as the site’s name tag — its face. Just 16×16 pixels, yet surprisingly powerful in shaping a site’s first impression.
Two Candidates, One Tough Choice
For this site, I asked ChatGPT and Gemini to generate favicon designs based on my original character “Tower-san.” Two completely different results:
Candidate A: Rich and detailed A complex, intricate design with fine linework against a moonlit backdrop. Impressive as a standalone illustration.
Candidate B: Clean silhouette (chosen!) A bright blue silhouette — simple, but instantly recognizable even at a glance.
Why I Chose the Silhouette
Honestly, both designs were strong and I genuinely struggled. But in the end, I went with B.
The reason: brand consistency. Candidate A was stunning on its own, but it didn’t quite feel like me — it didn’t match the overall vibe of my art style and this site.
Choosing not just “what looks good” but “what feels like a natural extension of who I am” — that kind of small branding decision shapes the whole atmosphere of a site.
Check the browser tab and see how it fits! And if you liked both options, feel free to hit the like button. 😊
